GlassFlow 2012

Published date: October 2013

Baseline data year: 2012

In 2012, the UK glass packaging recycling sector faced significant volatility, with low recycling figures in the first half of the year putting pressure on performance targets. To meet the EU Directive recycling target of 60%, the UK needed to recycle 1.65 million tonnes of glass packaging. Despite a surge in the final quarter, the total achieved was 59%, just short of compliance.

This shortfall, coupled with rising Packaging Waste Recovery Note (PRN) costs, highlighted the need for a detailed review of glass packaging flows. The GlassFlow project was launched to provide robust estimates and identify risks that could affect future recycling targets.
