Commissioned by WRAP and Valpak, this report reviews aluminium and steel packaging placed on the UK market (POM) and reprocessed in 2012, with updates for 2013 where data was available. The study also provides scenario analysis projecting recycling performance to 2020, supporting Defra’s packaging policy work.

Findings show aluminium packaging POM at 178k tonnes in 2012, with recycling rates rising from 35% to 46% when including unaccredited reprocessing. Steel packaging POM was estimated at 524k tonnes, with a recycling rate of 68%, increasing to 70% with unaccredited reprocessing. Overall, the UK met the EU metal packaging recycling target of 50% in 2012.
